Errol Flynn, one of Hollywood’s first true action heroes and box office champions was 50 years old when he arrived in Vancouver on October 9, 1959 to negotiate the sale of his beloved yacht Zaca to local businessman George Caldough. As a bankable star, Flynn was washed up but still a celebrity - and although he had managed to evade statutory rape convictions, three ex-wives looking for alimony and the tax man, he and his 17-year-old protégé were welcomed at the Vancouver Airport by a smattering of reporters representing Vancouver’s various papers.
Flynn was in no shape to travel – functionally drunk and in agonizing pain due to a slipped disc and deteriorating organs caused by years of alcohol and heroin abuse. However, he did manage to make the rounds with his enthusiastic host while working out the final details of the boat transaction.
Flynn’s condition would hinder the negotiations; ultimately, the papers would not be signed and the frail legend would never make his flight home to Los Angeles.
Film producer Patrick Stark has been fascinated by the last days of Errol Flynn since he was a child and this untitled feature film is currently in development for Pacific Empire Production Corporation.
